Assistive technology is a topic that has been a very intriguing topic to me for some time. The fact that there are devices in my field that has such an impact on people with disabilities is amazing! Not only do these devices help people with disabilities to grow in terms of functional capacity, but it can also help people to facilitate function and engagement in the population as well.
One thing to know about me is that I love a good podcast. Doctor Death, Dirty John, anything you can name, the chances are, I've seen it. Every single morning when I get ready, there's a podcast playing in the background. At the beginning of the semester, I began listening to On the Air. At the time, I was curious if I would have an interest in the military and traumatic brain injuries, so I ironically listened to the Army OT guy episode. There were plenty of things that I expected to hear about, like Walter Reed Medical Center and things of that nature, but I did not expect an army OT guy to have partnered with Xbox to build a piece of assistive technology. You know that encouraging and heartwarming Xbox commercial?? That's the one!!
With all of this being said, there are still a lot of challenges with assistive technology! There are a lot of grounds for funding, and sometimes the decisions just aren't in the hands of the occupational therapist. What I love about this topic is that it may not be a field that you envision yourself to be involved with. I had just assumed that my interests would never align because I just don't view myself as an innovator or someone who I thought could pull off some feat like that. The truth is assistive technology could be seen in various settings, and there is always room to learn more as an OT!
To change the subject, the next podcast on my list is definitely Cancer-Related Cognitive Dysfunction because it hits close to home. My aunt was diagnosed with brain cancer about 25 years ago, and along with her cognitive dysfunction stemming from that, she also has a traumatic brain injury that stemmed from a horseback accident. This topic heavily impacts the setting that I hope to work in one day, and I believe it will give me a lot of insight!
