Biomechanics: Reflection 2
While measuring range of motion (ROM), it is important to use bony landmarks and proper positioning for the sake of accuracy! After palpating bony landmarks, the goniometer should be positioned appropriately in relation to those landmarks. The proper positioning in ROM can increase reliability in terms of both intrarater and interrater reliability. These bony landmarks provide alignment with the arms and the fulcrum of the goniometer.
In manual muscle testing (MMT), the test position serves the purpose of getting the muscle to optimal muscle contraction. The gravity-eliminated position is where the resistance of gravity is eliminated for the test movement, one in which it is parallel to the ground. An example of this action would be a referee counting time.
