TedTalk: Dementia Village

I chose this TedTalk because dementia is a disease that hits close to home. About ten years ago, my great-grandmother made the decision that she wanted to live in our local nursing home because she did not want to live with or be a burden to my grandmother. At this time, she is progressively declining to where she does not remember many things. The title "dementia village" really caught my eye, and I wish that eldercare could be redefined locally as well.

Description of Material:

A previous care manager of a traditional nursing home realized that she would not want her family to live at the place she was overseeing. With lots of discussion with her team, she soon realized that they were the ones who could make the changes, and it was ultimately up to them to see the environment change. Her team decided to redefine elder care by taking a client-centered approach to making her facility an absolute oasis, where people would want to live in their later stages of life.

How I furthered my learning:

I furthered my learning by seeing what eldercare could look like. It is truly amazing to see client-centered approaches actually being implemented, especially to see a team make it seem so easy. It is actually admirable to see a care manager make this facility a home to people, where people are grouped by asking their interests and combining them with like-minded people. There was a quote in the TedTalk that I really resonated with, which said, "And the professionals know how to do their professional work in a way that it fits in a natural way in the life of our residents."

Reflection of learning/application in relation to course content:

This video is a testament to the fact that getting to understand your clients is achievable in real life. When you put the interests of your clients first, their families will want them to live in your facility, instead of it being their resort. The video gives me hope that I can be a professional, as well as fitting my work into a natural state for the people who will be living there. It is a good reminder that a nursing facility may just be a job to us, but it should be home to the clients living there.

Recommendation for others to watch material:

Highly recommend! This should be a resource for all to watch. I believe it correlates with the "OT Mindset" and foundations was running through my mind the entire time!
