Man From The South
In the story "Man From The South" a soldier was betting the fate of his pinky finger on the striking ability of a cigarette lighter! If the soldier in the story were to lose the bet and/or finger, his routine and occupations would likely change in many different ways, ranging from occupations regarding his duties as a soldier, as well as occupations related to self-care. The daily occupations of the betting man's wife might look very modified, as she would have lost the majority of her grip and power strength in one hand, which would effect methods of both pinching and gripping. Writing would be one task that she most likely struggled with. If the soldier were to lose the bet, his role of being a soldier would likely be impacted, especially in the sense of physical fitness. This occupation will be affected because of the balancing role of the pinky and its function in power gripping during activities such as chin-ups. This is because of the power grip that is heavily provided when the ring and pinky fingers come together firmly to grasp an object, such as a barbell or dumbbell set. One modification that could allow the soldier to regain the independence to complete a chinup would be using resistance bands to work the muscles in this group, such as the biceps and pectoralis major.
I agree that exercising would be harder for the soldier. Luckily, there are usually different exercises to work out muscle groups that do not require a barbell or dumbbell set. Like you mentioned, the solider can use resistance bands. The soldier could also try to do a modified chin up if he has access to the appropriate equipment. (The weighted chin up machine that that provides weight to offset body weight.)
